ISO 9001 implementation consulting prices in Spain
Consulting cost is the most variable item, and it depends on company size, process complexity, industry and how much documentation already exists. For a microbusiness with 1 to 10 employees and simple processes, consulting costs range from €900 to €2,500. For a small business with 11 to 50 employees, the range sits between €2,500 and €5,000. A medium-sized business with 51 to 250 employees will pay between €5,000 and €10,000. And a large company with more than 250 employees, with multiple sites or complex processes, may need an investment of €10,000 to €50,000 or more.
These prices cover the initial diagnosis, the design of the quality management system, documentation (quality manual, procedures, work instructions, records), team training, running the internal audit, and support during the external certification audit. Be wary of proposals offering full consulting for under €800: at that price, you typically get generic documentation that doesn't reflect your company's actual processes and that won't pass the certification audit without costly rework. A good consultant spends between 40 and 120 hours on an SME implementation, which at market rates of €50 to €80 per hour justifies the ranges above.

Certification audit cost
The certification audit is carried out by a certification body accredited by ENAC (Spain's National Accreditation Body). The cost depends on the number of audit days, which is in turn calculated according to the IAF MD5 guidelines based on employee count, number of sites, industry and process complexity. For a microbusiness, the initial audit (Stage 1 + Stage 2) costs between €1,500 and €2,500. For an SME with 20-50 employees, between €2,500 and €4,500. For a company with 100-250 employees, between €4,500 and €8,000. The price per auditor day is set by each certification body and none publishes an official rate: based on market quotes it runs around €700-900 per day, and differences between accredited certifiers are rarely decisive for an SME. Get quotes from two or three (AENOR, Bureau Veritas, SGS, Applus or other ENAC-accredited bodies) and compare audit days offered, not just the total.
Annual maintenance: the cost nobody tells you about
ISO 9001 certification runs on a three-year cycle: the initial audit in year 0, surveillance audits in years 1 and 2, and a renewal audit in year 3. Surveillance audits usually run one-third to two-thirds the length of the initial audit, costing an SME €1,000 to €2,500 each. On top of that comes the cost of keeping the system running: updating documentation, managing nonconformities, equipment calibration (where applicable), ongoing training and preparing the management review. Many companies hire an external maintenance service that runs €200 to €500 a month, or have a consultant visit 2 to 4 times a year at a cost of €1,000 to €3,000 annually. Total annual maintenance cost for a typical SME sits between €2,500 and €5,000, including the surveillance audit and maintenance consulting.
What makes your certification cost more or less
Several factors can significantly change the final cost. Companies with multiple sites or work centers need more audit days and more site-specific documentation. Sectors with additional regulatory requirements (food, pharmaceutical, healthcare) require more implementation time. Companies that already have documented processes and some degree of systemization from the start need less consulting time. And choosing to implement an integrated management system (ISO 9001 + 14001 + 45001) saves 20-30% compared to implementing each standard separately, because cross-cutting processes are shared.
Another factor to consider is funding, and here it's worth being clear about which public grants do NOT fund an ISO 9001, since it's a common source of confusion. Kit Consulting (Red.es) awards €12,000 (10-49 employees), €18,000 (50-99) and €24,000 (100-249), and it does have a certification-preparation category, but it's limited to cybersecurity: an ISMS under ISO 27001 and ENS medium-high (CCN-STIC 825 guide), with the certification itself excluded. It does not fund ISO 9001 quality certification. The Junta de Castilla y León's CSR grant line covers up to 65% of consulting costs (up to €3,000 maximum), but for ISO 14001, 45001 and other social-responsibility standards, not for 9001. The realistic option that remains is FUNDAE's training credit (calculated by applying a rebate percentage to the vocational training contributions paid, based on company size), and only for the training hours tied to implementing the system — never for consulting or the audit itself.
